港督彭定康最近回倫敦述職之前舉行記者招待會。會上，記者問他對人民入境事務處前處長梁銘彥的廉正操守有沒有信心，問他覺得梁銘彥是不是一位出色的處長。港督回答這兩個問題都很技巧，也很簡明。原話是這樣說的：
Question： Speaking of fidence， do you have full fiden the iy of Laurence Leung before his retirement； do you tio have full fiden his professional iy； and was the Hong Kong Gover in any way warned about him by any fn gover？
Governor： I don''t want to say any more than the Secretary for the Civil Service has said in the Legislative cil and that he has said in respoo questions elsewhere. The former Director of Immigratio public service for personal reasons. We have an excellent Director of Immigration in his plad I have full fiden the iy of our immigration system， our system of issuing visas and polig checks at our frontiers.
Question： Would you say that he was an excellent Director？
Governor： I would say that he worked for many years for the Hong Kong Gover and I don''t want to add to anything else that has been said about his departure from the public service.
記者的第一個問題分三部分：一、對梁銘彥退休前的廉正操守有沒有充分的信心；二、現在對梁銘彥的專業操守還有沒有信心；三、有沒有任何外國政府警告過香港政府要提防他。港督的回應也分三部分：一、公務員事務司在立法局以及其他地方回應過這些問題，我不想多說；二、人民入境事務處前處長因私人理由離職；三、我們有了一位出色的處長接替他的職位，我對我們的出入境制度、簽證制度以及邊防巡邏等的廉正操守信心十足。記者只提到外國政府警告港府，沒有提到入境制度、簽證制度、邊防巡邏。記者的第二個問題只問港督認不認為梁銘彥是一位出色的處長。港督只說他在香港政府里工作好多年；關於他的離職，過去已經說過了，港督不願意再多說。
港督談到他希望香港政府各部門的廉正操守都不容置疑。港督說，他跟外國政府談九七後香港市民免簽證的時候，他要的是自己能滿懷信心指出我們的制度行得通，我們的制度既廉且正。他的措詞是：「I want to be able to say with plete fidehat...」。他說，幾天前他跟義大利外長談這個問題的時候，他可以用最大的信心指出我們的制度既廉且正。他的措辭是：「I was able to speak to him with maximum fiden the iy of our system」。
語言文字原來就充滿微妙的玄機。文字媒體往往只是轉述一席話的內容大意，無形中丟掉了許許多多的話里玄機。再說，怎麼樣的問話引出怎麼樣的回應，常常正是故事中的故事。
